Sonia Donaldson

Trustee

Sonia Donaldson has been a proud member of IUOE 955 since 2008, your Trustee on your Executive Board since 2017, Recording Corresponding Secretary (2021) and brings with her decades of experience in Union and community leadership.

Sonia has been a strong Union advocate most of her adult life, starting at 17 with CUPE, then joining ACTRA (Alliance of Canadian Television/Radio Artists). As a Union member, Sonia learned the difference Unions made in the lives of working people, from improved working conditions, to strong health & safety practices, increased wages, health benefits and pension.

Sonia was a professional performing artist for 23 years (film/TV/theatre actor/vocalist/recording radio voice over artist) and business owner/entrepreneur of Prosound Productions. She was honoured to serve as ambassador of the city as the last Klondike Kate in Edmonton. Through her work with labour organizations, was introduced to the construction industry. She had a desire to be involved in active change and inspired to serve early in her career. She was elected and served on the ACTRA Edmonton executive board, including past President of ACTRA Edmonton and National Councilor for ACTRA Alberta. Sonia also volunteered in many capacities, including the Big Brother/Sister organization and was honoured to mentor a student at an indigenous school. She embraced the opportunity to train and become an equipment operator through IUOE 955!

Sonia knows the dedication, integrity and ethics required to be an effective leader. She brings a unique and well-rounded experience to her role as Trustee. Sonia 's commitment to improving the quality of worker’s lives, is reflected by her service on numerous executive boards and directors throughout her active careers, spanning 40 years. As a 17-year IUOE 955 member in good standing, Sonia has served for 8 years as a dedicated advocate for our membership on the IUOE 955 executive board. Sonia has also served as Job Steward on many projects over 17 years.

Sonia is passionate about addressing women’s issues and the unique challenges that our Sister’s encounter in the trades. Sonia is dedicated to fostering positive, inclusive changes that promote diversity and equality in the work force and our membership.

During a politically charged era, when workers rights are under siege, the economy struggling, and Unions facing increasing challenges, Sonia is committed to making your voice heard. Sonia’s commitment to serving our members is unwavering, as she strives to proudly serve our membership in solidarity, and strengthen our ever growing IUOE Local 955.
